In a recent blog, we covered the effectiveness of flypaper as well as its pros and cons with regards to capturing flies on your property. As a homeowner suffering from a fly problem, you have two options when it comes to this product. Purchase some from an online outlet or hardware store, or create some yourself.
With a few easy ingredients and a simple recipe, it doesn’t take long to create a sticky formula that will lure the flies to your paper. However, if you’re more concerned with convenience, then purchasing a ready-made version may be better suited to you.
Essentially, we think flypaper is a great way to deal with small-scale fly problems. The sticky residue makes it a compelling bait choice for the surrounding fly population to travel towards the paper. However, given the size of the flypaper, you’re somewhat limited to how you can scale this trap choice. Let’s face it, you can always hang more flypaper around your property, but the attractiveness of this option isn’t great.
Flypaper is mainly effective with fruit flies, here’s why.
The reason flypaper is so effective at attracting and capturing fruit flies is due to the fact that this species is extremely interested in sweet and sticky materials. This is the type of fly you’re likely to find hanging around your kitchen, feeding on your fruit and vegetables.
Although they won’t necessarily cause you any harm directly, their presence is certainly something to be aware of and consider. As they travel around your property, they land and deposit germs and disease onto your food, increasing the chance for illness and infection. They can also be extremely annoying, particularly when you’re trying to enjoy dinner or moments with your family.
Not only are they annoying, but they’re fast too! A female fruit fly is capable of laying hundreds of eggs within its short life cycle. They normally lay eggs on moist and fermenting food items. In just 24 hours, these eggs can then hatch into larvae (also known as maggots!)
I assume those facts were enough to make you concerned. However, this is where the flypaper comes in. Using a layer of sticky residue, the flypaper looks harmless to the fly. However, once they land on the paper, they are unable to escape, causing them to eventually die.
You may be thinking, what happens next? Well, a bunch of dead flies hanging around your house isn’t the most attractive sight. This makes it important to dispose of the flypaper and re-hang regularly.
In terms of our advice on how to use flypaper, the most important consideration to make is where they hang the strips. There’s no use hanging flypaper strips in areas where the flies don’t operate, you must analyze and understand the movement of the fly population before hanging the paper. This will give you a much better chance of capturing the bastards before the infestation becomes too large to handle.
Besides the places where the flies like to gather and hang out, the best locations to hang your flypaper are normally areas near windowpanes, trash cans, and various entrances of your home. This can include doorways, garage doors, sheds, open windows, air vents, etc. You can also try areas near water sources like your sink or outdoor tap. Flies are attracted to moisture, so this is normally a great place to hang them.
This is normally effective as these are the gateways flies like to use to enter and leave your home. If you can trap them on their way into the property, then this removes the need to deal with them inside. I think we can all agree that a fly problem outdoors is less annoying than one inside your home.
However, as we said before, please don’t rely on flypaper to take care of your fly problem entirely. Fly infestations can lead to serious complications, meaning professional help is required to remove them.
As we have discussed previously and will continue to stress, fly problems aren’t a laughing matter. You may see your fly problem as a small inconvenience, but the complications are vast and should be dealt with seriously. Given the rate at which flies reproduce, it’s absolutely essential that you move quickly when it comes to tackling the problem.
By all means, attempt to create your own traps and handle the problem on your own. Showing initiative and removing the flies early is a great way to get ahead of the problem. However, when they breed, it’s almost impossible to keep up with when it comes to DIY options.
