The good news is, there are plenty of places you can source fly traps that will help with your problem. Both online and offline. 

Depending on where you live, you’re bound to find some kind of trap within your local hardware store or even Home Depot. If not, then a dedicated store may be more suitable, but these are harder to find. 

If, like us, you’re in the 21st century, then an online retailer is probably your best bet. However, be careful. Within the vast space of agricultural and fly-catching products, you’re likely to find plenty of rubbish that is simply a marketing gimmick. For every good trap, you’ll also find a bad one. This makes it hard for consumers who are unaware of what does and doesn’t work. We’re big advocates of doing the necessary research. Don’t just dive in and purchase. 

The next part of your fly trap purchase journey is finding a trap that is suitable for your problem. In this beginner’s guide, we’ll cover where to buy different fly traps and why they may (or may not) help you on your road to fly domination. 

Disposable fly traps

A quick ‘fly traps’ Google search is likely to bring a wide range of disposable traps to your attention. Despite being a short-term (disposable) solution, these traps do have their advantages. The important part is making sure you order enough to satisfy the level of infestation you’re currently battling. 

Disposable fly traps range from net traps, to cone traps, fly paper and beyond. Let’s start with net traps. Net traps can be hung in areas around your home and use bait to attract the fly population. If suitable bait has been used, flies should begin to enter your trap, capturing them inside. The beauty of this trap is, the fuller they get, the more attractive they become to future visitors. The smellier and nastier, the better! However, once they’re full, they need to be disposed of quickly. This is due to the fact that they’re rather unsightly and smell really bad close up. 

Flypaper is kind of the same principle, flies will land on the paper and become stuck once they land. These are effective too, but become useless once full. Similarly with the net traps, they need to be disposed of quickly. Sticky paper full of flies isn’t the nicest thing to have hanging around your home. 

Another important thing to mention is, you don’t necessarily have to purchase a disposable fly trap. For the DIY enthusiasts, there are plenty of fly traps you can create at home which will aid you in your battle against the flies. 

For example, the most common DIY trap is the dish trap. Simply take a standard dish from your kitchen and fill with apple cider vinegar and dish soap, then leave on the side near an area where flies like to enter. Spaces like countertops or windowsills work fine. Flies will land on the dish to drink the apple cider vinegar but sink into the material. This is because the dish soap cuts the surface tension of the liquid. Pretty neat right?

You could also try what we like to call the ‘discoball’ trap. Simply grab a zip lock clear bag and fill with water. Then, hang outside your home and let nature do the work. As the wind catches the bag, it will begin to move, causing the water to shimmer and shine in the sunlight. This blinds the flies, causing them to stay away from your property. 

Although DIY is an easy and convenient way to start catching flies right away, it does have its limitations. These traps are very much a small-scale solution. If you’re looking for a more industrious option, then opt for the net trap. But that’s just our opinion. 

Insect traps

There are other things you should be aware of too. Instead of searching fly traps, try searching for things that flies don’t like. You’d be surprised what you have around the house that can help to deter these pesky insects. 

For example, flies hate natural oils, herbs and scents. Therefore, some of your garden plants may be your secret weapon in the quest to fly domination. Herbs and plants such as basil, lavender and citronella oil are great fly deterrents. 

We suggest purchasing some citronella candles and placing them around the house, they smell great and do the hard work without you noticing a thing. Just make sure to place in areas where flies enter. There’s no use lighting them if the flies can’t sense them. 

I know we mentioned the limitations of DIY traps before, but some are great if you have a specific fly problem. E.g., Fruit flies. As you may or may not know, fruit flies love sweet and sticky substances. Therefore, use their weakness against them!

Traps that use various bottles with sweet substances inside are perfect. This means wine, beer and soda bottles all do the trick. Simply leave some of the material inside and place in areas outside your home. Greedy flies will enter the traps to feed on what’s inside, but will be unable to navigate their way out. 

Venus fly trap

Another important ally to mention is the Venus Fly Trap. Yes, that’s right. The plant that likes to feed on stuff. You may be thinking, how can that help? Well, it’s pretty simple. The Venus fly trap likes to feed on various things, including flies. Using digestive enzymes, this secret killer will digest flies in its own time, helping to take care of some of the fly population. However, don’t rely on this plant to do all the hard work. Although it can serve as a loyal ally in your battle, it works on its own time. That means you shouldn’t rely on it to take care of large-scale fly problems. 

Fruit fly trap

As we briefly mentioned before, the clue to defeating fruit flies is in its name. Fruit flies are pesky devils that like to feed on fermenting material like fruit and vegetables. They also like sweet and sticky substances like beer, wine and soda. 

We’ve already given you a DIY trap you can use to take care of a small number of them. But there are other ways to deter them too. For example, if the goal is to move the fly population away from the house, dispose of all your old fruit and veg at the bottom of your garden. This acts as a beacon to fruit flies, causing them to travel away from your property towards your decoy. Although this is effective, we’d always suggest removing them from your property entirely. 

You can also try this method which we’ve seen great results with in the past. Take some chopped, old fruit and place it in a bowl. Then, tightly cover the bowl with plastic wrap and secure the top with a rubber band. Finally, using a toothpick or something similar, poke a few holes in the plastic top. The holes should be large enough for fruit flies to make their way in, but small enough to keep them from escaping. This is a great trap as you’re using old fruit that would otherwise be thrown away, but the flies can’t resist it. 

Pest control

Finally, the boring part. We know it’s easy to say you shoulda, woulda, coulda done certain things, but we think it’s important to discuss pest control before the end of this blog. It may be the case that you’re currently battling an infestation, or a neighbor is battling one and you’re preparing for the worst. Either way, these simple pest control tips will help to prevent further fly problems, meaning you can sleep a little easier at night. 

It’s easy to search for fly traps when the problem has become too bad to sort out yourself. But what if you could purchase a few cleaning products and adopt some new behaviors that would prevent their arrival entirely?

This is a win win for homeowners. Not only does this prevent flies from arriving at your home, but it also keeps it neat and tidy.

Similarly with your outdoor areas, keep your garden in check! The longer and wilder your garden is, the higher chance flies will be lurking around inside of it. As you may or may not know, flies love to breed in long grass. Therefore, keeping a short and sharp lawn will remove the potential for any fly fests!

Lastly, a little house management can go a long way. If, like us, you want fresh air running through your home, its often the case you have the windows and doors open, particularly during the summer months. This is okay, but you should be aware that these act as the gateway for flies to make it from outside into your beloved indoor areas. We suggest purchasing fans instead. Or, opening windows and having a net attached to block any unwanted guests.
