Controlling flies on pastured cattle
If you’re reading this before peak fly season has arrived then other options may be available to you. If you haven’t noticed flies around your cattle just yet then it may be early enough to start a fly prevention program.
This consists of employing various protocols around your farm or ranch to ensure the area isn’t attractive to the pending arrival of the fly population. Depending on the species you’re facing, it’s important to keep everything as clean as possible.
Flies are attracted to rotting and fermenting waste, as well as any smelly stuff you may have lied around. Therefore, keep on top of your cleaning schedule and maybe even up the cleaning where possible.

They are actually responsible for decreasing the growth rate in young calves by depositing and transmitting disease. This affects calf weaning weights and their overall health and wellbeing. Their energy is spent to defend themselves against the attack of the flies, instead of using this towards their early development and progression.
In terms of a horn fly control strategy, the same principles mentioned previously will still apply. Just make sure to remove any attractive wet and smelly deposits like manure and wet puddles etc.
