If you’re unaware of the problems that flies pose to you and your animals, then check out one of our previous blogs. In short, they have the potential to leave a harmful (and often deadly) mark on your animals.
In order to stop this from happening, we suggesting we putting a fly control program in place. Whether you try to capture and kill them when they arrive, or attempt to prevent their arrival in the first place, it’s important to pick a strategy.
Let’s cover some of your options.
Cattle are a prime target for our common enemy. They are attracted to various secretions including tear fluid, milk, blood and urine. Therefore, the presence of flies around your cattle will become incredibly prominent during seasonal periods.
In order to stop this from happening, we suggest taking care of the fly population with a range of traps. Of course, we recommend the Ranch Fly Trap. Our trap is the leading fly-catching system on the market, designed to stop fly infestations of all shapes and sizes.
Regardless of the fly species or size of problem, our fly-capture technology is proven to reduce the fly population. Set up in a matter of seconds, our trap is paired with a tried and tested bait recipe, meaning flies will flock to the trap and not your beloved cattle.

If you’re reading this before peak fly season has arrived then other options may be available to you. If you haven’t noticed flies around your cattle just yet then it may be early enough to start a fly prevention program.
This consists of employing various protocols around your farm or ranch to ensure the area isn’t attractive to the pending arrival of the fly population. Depending on the species you’re facing, it’s important to keep everything as clean as possible.
Flies are attracted to rotting and fermenting waste, as well as any smelly stuff you may have lied around. Therefore, keep on top of your cleaning schedule and maybe even up the cleaning where possible.
You should also ensure to keep grass nice and short. Flies love to breed in long grass so it should be a main priority to remove the potential for any reproduction. In the long run, this may help to keep population levels low enough to manage.
Lastly, water sources. We’ve spoken at length about horse flies and their need for damp conditions in order to thrive and survive. Therefore, by managing areas and keeping things dry, you should be able to keep on top of them.
You may also be suffering from horn flies. These are the most common type of fly you’ll find around your cattle. They tend to lie low underneath dung pats and are responsible for a huge amount of deaths in cattle across the US and further afield.
They are actually responsible for decreasing the growth rate in young calves by depositing and transmitting disease. This affects calf weaning weights and their overall health and wellbeing. Their energy is spent to defend themselves against the attack of the flies, instead of using this towards their early development and progression.
In terms of a horn fly control strategy, the same principles mentioned previously will still apply. Just make sure to remove any attractive wet and smelly deposits like manure and wet puddles etc.
This is a little bit of a clickbaity headline. There is no proven method to remove your fly problem in one easy step. With that being said, the Ranch Fly Trap is the closest thing you’re going to find.
We always urge people to learn through trial and error. However, time is never on your side when it comes to an infestation. The main priority should always be to control the fly population as early as possible in order to avoid breeding and the size of the problem scaling out of control.
